THE BRUTALIST is an interesting drama about people, the American Dream, survivors, and how people treat each other. It is
well written (except a weak ending), directed with excellent production design, and a good cast despite it being a little
too long for some. THE BRUTALIST revolves around a Hungarian architect who ends up in the USA after World War 2. He is the
survivor of the concentration camps. He is separated from his wife and his neice. He is looking to start over again and
pursue the American dream as he hopes to reunited with his wife soon (but she and his niece are trapped in a communist country
in Eastern Europe. By chance, he is hired to design a library for a rich guy as a surprise. It leads to him being hired
to design a big community center which will act as a library and a church.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Audio commentary with Director of Photography Loi Crawley
THE ARCHITECTS OF THE BRUTALIST featurette is a making-of which focuses on all elements of the movie from the cast to
production design to the filming of it
Also included in this 4K digipak with slipcover are art cards showing architectural renderings from the movie.
FINAL ANALYSIS: THE BRUTALIST is like an old classic picture combined with the European film sensibility. The ending
doesn't completely work for me, but I do feel it is a better film than Oscars Best Picture winner Anora (which I did enjoy).
I do wish the disc had more extras and even a featurette on the architecture style known as Brutalism.
