Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is no normal human.  She is a waitress who can read minds.  She is living an isolated life in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana until she meets vampire Bill Compton, a 173 year old vampire who just moved back to town.  The world is different since vampires came out to the world (two years ago) after the Japanese invented synthetic blood (the most popular brand being Tru Blood).   Bon Temps is also home to a few colorful characters like the gay cook Lafayette (who also deals in V aka vampire blood), Sookie’s hotheaded best friend Tara, Sookie’s womanizing brother Jason (who soon ends up doing V), and Sam (the owner of Merlotte’s where Sookie works and Sam holds a secret).

TRUE BLOOD is more daring than anything SIX FEET UNDER ever did as a show.    The show is daring, sexy, bloody, funny, and full of blood and nudity.  It looks at issues like racism and relationships through the idea of having vampire introduced into the world.  You have people looking down on Sookie more than usual when she gets involved with Bill.   People known to have relationships are known as fang bangers.   You have religion against the Vampire Rights Amendment as they claim vampires are the work of Satan and should be brought into the light.   By the end of the first season, Tara did get on my nerves (I wouldn’t mind if the character got killed off).  The show really comes alive when it focuses on Sookie, Bill, Sam, and the vampires.  What I can say about TRU BLOOD is that it got great cliffhangers that make you want to watch the next episode immediately.  The only problem is the show seems to stumble here and there in the final episode of the season.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Audio commentaries were recorded for six episodes.  Some of the tracks are pretty dry.

The best extras await on disc 5 with the downright funny Tru Blood ads, the Vampire Dating and Hotel ads, and the public service announcements for and against the Vampire Rights Amendment.  Also a mockumentary (IN FOCUS: VAMPIRES IN AMERICA) that looks at the world of TRU BLOOD through a news program is also on the disc.  Each episode features the option to play the previously on and next on parts of the episode.   Too bad they couldn’t have included a trailer for season 2 (which starts soon).

FINAL ANALYSIS:  I love TRUE BLOOD.  I can’t wait to see season 2 because this show has perfect cliffhangers.  Too bad they didn’t include some actual making of featurettes in the set.
