TH UNIT is an addictive and well-written drama. I found myself watching it 2 to 3 episodes at a time. I don't have a favorite
episode. I love the entire season (even though I still have my doubts about the last scene in THE WALL). THE UNIT is about
a covert special ops force and their wives. The Unit is a secretive bunch and their wives must also protect what their husbands
do because one mistake could spell doom for a member of the Unit. David Mamet, the creator of this series, is to blame for
such a great series. It is the perfect companion of NCIS on CBS. Author Eric L. Haney wrote a book called INSIDE DELTA FORCE
focusing on his missions as a an operator for Delta Force. He wanted to turn his book into a series and show the human cost
of the people who go on these missions to stop terrorists. He consulted with writer/director David Mamet for the film SPARTAN
(an excellent film you should see if you haven't) and it lead to the development of Haney's book into a series. Haney touches
on his real experiences for THE UNIT. The show has a great cast (including Dennis Haysbert (as Jonas Blane) who is quickly
putting behind his image of President Palmer in 24, Robert Patrick as Colonel Ryan, and Scott Foley (Bob Brown)). The writing
and direction add to an explosive combination for every episode of THE UNIT with a cast like this. Bob and Jonas are my favorite
characters, but some of the others including the wives give a good run for the money. I even managed to catch every epsidoe
of season 2 so far. The character arcs run through the episodes, but the stories are episodic in nature. Give THE UNIT a chnce
is you haven't already.
VIDEO: 1.78:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)
Image detail is nice. Color and black levels are consistent with the look of the show.
AUDIO: English 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish
SPECIAL FEATURES: The audio commentary for SERE with Executive Producer Shawn Ryan, Exec Prod and Author Eric L. Hanney,
and Actor Demore Barnes is mostly disposable except for the stories from the author about real tactics used by covert ops
guys and elements that inspired certain things in the episode.
THE UNIT: INSIDE DELTA FORCE is a very brief 7 1/2 minute featurette about the series which features executive producers
Erin L. Haney (who wrote the book- INSIDE DELTA FORCE), David Mamet, and Shawn Ryan. I hope the next set will have interviews
with the cast and a more detailed look at how the show is made.
TVShowsOnDVD originally announced more extras for this set and I wonder what happened. Did Fox scale back on their extras
plans? I hope more extras will show up on the season 2 set next year.
FINAL ANALYSIS: THE UNIT is a well crafted and riveting military drama that is for anyone who loves action and military
drama.
