DVD Review by David Blackwell
DETAILS: 100 minutes, alternate opening, bloopers, featurettes, music video, three Easter Eggs
STUDIO: Disney
RELEASE DATE: 11-30-2005
SKY HIGH is a funny superhero comedy that falters with a stupid plot by the archenemy. SKY HIGH focuses on Will Stronghold,
a teenager who is expected to pick up the family legacy because his parents are superheroes- The Commander (Kurt Russell)
and Jetstream (Kelly Preston). The only problem is that he has no superpowers yet and he looks to be destined to the life
of a sidekick instead of hero when he attends a special high school called SKY HIGH.
The best things about SKY HIGH are the music score and Kevin McDonald as Mr. Medulla (a mad scientist teacher at SKY HIGH).
SKY HIGH unfortunately uses superpowers and sidekicks as just another movie about high school. I would have loved to have
seen the teenager save the world with his parents instead of just a one to one fight. It is an entertaining film, but I think
I can easily forget about it. If you take away the training to be heroes and sidekicks, you are just left with another dumb
high school movie.
VIDEO: 2.35:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)
The transfer is solid. Colors and blacks are good. Image detail is OK.
AUDIO: English 5.1 Dolby Digital, French 5.1 DD, Spanish 5.1 DD
Subtitles: French, English SDH
Dialogue is easy to hear, but the 5.1 makes the most of the music score.
SPECIAL FEATRUES: SKY HIGH has several extras including an interesting alternate opening which spoils the surprise near
the end of the movie, a blooper reel, WELCOME TO SKY HIGH featurtte which shows how much the actors are goofs in between takes,
and BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS: THE STUNTS OF SKY HIGH that shows the computer controlled wire rig that enables them to have
the actors do many of their own stunts. also on the DVD are a music video and three Easter Eggs- a storyboard sequence that
helped SKY HIGH get made, a character design montage, and a feature on the gerbil they used in the film. Some extras are fun
while others are a total waste of time. I wish they had done an audio commentary for the film.
FINAL ANALYSIS: SKY HIGH is popcorn entertainment to watch and forget. Just an easy way to spend 100 minutes for a DVD
rental.
