DVD review: RAZOR BLADE SMILE

by David Blackwell

Sometimes you get the best movies out of the low budget movie field and RAZOR BLADE SMILE is one of those gems. It is a fresh and energetic take on vampires that turns the usual vampire lore on it's head.  RAZOR BLADE SMILE is about Lilith Silver, a female vampire, who is a hitwoman that is going after members in a crime sect.

Director Jake West weaves an impressive movie with great visuals and an interesting story.  I would like to see another feature film directed by Jake West.   Lilith is a compelling character that you just want to love. I like it how the the Hollywood things about vampires are bull and Lilith points them out during the movie.   Lilith is a great character.   She is a vampire who has to find her own fun since she lives forever.   Her friends don't belive what Lilith says about vampires (because they like how vampires are presented in movies more).    It is neat to see a movie that says all you know about vampires is all wrong (except for the blood sucking part). The movie has a neat tiwst ending.

The extras basically amount to some trailers and a reprint of an article on the movie from FEMME FATALES magazine.   I would like to see the movie KILLER TONGUE (it has Melinda Clarke in it).

Some of the acting is bad in the movie. The sword fight at the end of the movie was shot badly and the shots should have been framed better.

However, I give RAZOR BLADE SMILE high marks for being a different vampire movie filmed on a low budget. Buy or rent this movie if you want something different from the usual Hollywood vampire movies.

DVD review- CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE

by David Blackwell

CUBE 2 isn't a bad sequel. It is an entertaining sci-fi movie with some interesting concepts and ideas. The only bad thing is I didn't like the ending (I had the same problem with CUBE). There are deleted scens on the DVD which are variations of sequences without finished effects (some were even test effects). The alternate ending is a nice variation that sheds a little more light on what is going on in the movie.

CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE is interesting. Time is the enemy that the people trapped in the hypercube must face. Geraint Wyn Davies is one of the people starring in the movie (and we will get back to him when I review the FOREVER KNIGHT TRILOGY next week). So the people trapped in the cube must work together and get out of the hypercube before the variable time traps kill all of them.

CUBE 2 isn't bad for a sci-fi movie made on a small budget. You have good actors and a plot that moves along. I can't wait to see CUBE ZERO in 2004.

P.S.   I have been getting the most email on DRACULA 2: ASCENSION.  It is quite interesting.   Expect DRACULA 3 to come out on DVD in 2004.

COMING SOON:  DVD review of FOREVER KNIGHT TRILOGY PART ONE and pilot reviews of LINE OF FIRE (which premieres on ABC on December 2nd, 2003 in the USA) and NYPD 2069.    Have a happy and safe and fun Halloween.   Find some good haunted houses and watch some good horror movies.
