Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) is the first kid born on Mars, but his mother (an astronaut died after giving birth to him and he has been kept a secret.  It is a sixteen years later and he gets a chance to go to earth.  He decides it is a chance to connect with his internet pal Tulsa (Britt Robertson) and go in search for the father he has never met. What follows is a road trip love story between and orphan from Mars and a 16 year old foster kid while Gradner’s astronaut foster mom (Carla Gugino) and the head of a space corporation (Gary Oldman) try to track Gardner down because Gardner’s heart might not be able to handle Earth gravity.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US is a good sci-fi romance only let down by the ending because they decided to leave things open for a possible sequel.  And somehow they don’t even touch on the consequences of Tulsa stealing all those vehicles in their cross-country trip.  It is a charming movie of young romance and discovery.  The casting is mostly good where Butterfield and Robertson have great chemistry, but I do think Gary Oldman is a wasted in his role in this movie.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

A few deleted scenes including the alternate ending and the full opening speech, but the mugging scene of Gardener was thankfully left on the cutting room floor

LOVE featurette is a short promo featurette talking about the stories and themes of the movie.

Audio commentary with director Peter Chelsom focuses a lot on story and a few production details including discussion on the climax and ending of the movie

Also in this combo pack are a copy of the movie in standard definition on DVD and a code to download or stream a digital HD copy of the movie

FINAL ANALYSIS:  THE SPACE BETWENE US is a good sci-fi romance that sadly feels incomplete due to how they leave it open at the end.
