GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS
Movie Review by David Blackwell

132 minutes, Rated PG-13
STUDIO: Warner Bros Pictures/ Legendary Pictures
Theatrical RELEASE DATE: 5-31-2019
Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) works for the secret organization Monarch who has been studying the monstrous Titans over the decades. She has developed a device that allows Monarch to communicate with these giant monsters, but she, her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown), and Emma's device are kidnapped by an eco-terrorist group led by Alan Jonah (Charles Dance). Monarch seeks the help of Mark (Kyle Chandler), Emma's ex-husband to track down the eco-terrorist group and to help stop them from awakening all of the titans from their slumber. Alan's goal is right the balance of nature so that humanity can start again and away from their path of destruction against the Earth. He plans to awaken all of the monsters including Rodan and Monster Zero. The only monster in the way is Godzilla.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is the Godzilla movie that the first movie should have been. It is a big budget monster battle film that honors the Japanese Godzilla movies including featuring parts of the original Godzilla movie themes as part of the soundtrack score of this sequel. It has an ecological warning slant like many of the Japanese Godzilla movies did, but this movie importantly focuses the plot on the battle between monsters and developing the human characters is secondary (leaving only enough details about the humans to help move the plot forward). The creature design for Rodan, Ghidorah, and Mothra is spot on. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS does expand the mythology of the MonsterVerse films (which includes GODZILLA, KONG: SKULL ISLAND, and next year's GODZILLA VS. KONG). Plenty of destruction is wrought by the monsters throughout the movie and the fight between them will make any Godzilla fan and summer popcorn movie fan happy. Fans of Godzilla movies and PACIFIC RIM will walk away happy after watching this one. Stay around through the end credits for the bonus scene.
