2010 DVD In Review
article by David Blackwell

MOVIES ON DVD-

The DVDs mentioned in this article are based on various things wheether they are good movies and/or have impressive extras.  Some films that had great extras are in the 2010 Movies list due to how good the films are.   The list is based on some of the films I enjoyed the most on DVD for 2010.  Don't be surprised if next year's article will be focused on Blu-ray and DVD since the Blu-ray format is getting more loaded with extras and many Blu-rays also include a DVD of the movie in combo packs.

AVATAR Extended Collector's Edition-

Three cuts of the movie and the DVD extended cut with the alternate opening is best of the three.   The making-of documentary is good to watch along with an hour of deleted scenes

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE-

The books have taken the world by storm and you should watch the two made-for TV movies from Sweden before the David Fincher version of the first movie comes out at the end of this year (the third movie is out on DVD at the end of this month).  Naomi Rapace soars as Lisabeth Salander.

PANDORUM

If you didn't catch this very underwatched gem in 2009 in theaters, you should watch the DVD with 30 minutes of deleted scenes.   This film is better than CASE 39 (directed by the same guy and yet CASE 39 may get more viewers on DVD sadly).

VENGEANCE TRILOGY

This Korean trilogy of Vengeance is by a director who is one of the best directors in the last 20 years.  OLDBOY and LADY EVNGEANCE are the two to watch for their humanity and action.

RED CLIFF (Original International Version)

Skip the theatrical cut and watch the five hour cut which was presented as two movies in China.  The theatrical cut cuts the film by half and loses some of the depth an character development seen in the international version of John Woo's epic.

THE COMPLETE METROPOLIS

The closest ever version to what Director Fritz Lang originally cut together after some missing scenes were found in Argentina.  This silent film is still very watchable and very visual.   Now I wish the pop music cut of the film would see DVD release.

TV SHOWS ON DVD-

The following TV shows on DVDs are some of the shows you should check out due to the series being good and some fo them also having a nice assortment of extras.   Not every impressive TV on DVD set is included.  The following is a list of some of those sets that deserve extra attention.

LAW & ORDER UK Season 1

I have been a fan of British crime drama for a long time and this UK take on LAW & ORDER brings fresh life to an old and sometimes tired brand.

LOST Season 6

The show came to an end whetehr you liked the answers in the end or not.   The show was able to end without being drug out forever.

SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND Season 1

This new take on Spartacus has blood, sex, and character dveelopment.   The sad thing is the lead had to be recast and best wishes to him (I hope I see him in other shows and movies in the future after he returns to full health).

FRINGE Season 2

FRINGE just keeps getting better and I hope FOX sticks with it for at least a fourth season.   It is like a new version of THE X-FILES.

DOLLHOUSE Season 2

Joss Whedon can't get any luck.   First, FIREFLY and now this show called DOLLHOUSE.  Kudos for FOX giving it a second season which was even better than the first show.   The show found it's voice in the second season.  Check out the first and second season on DVD.

DEFYING GRAVITY

An underwatched sci-fi show that I would have loved to see continue.

STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.0

STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.5

The STARGATE saga is taken in a different direction as the series focuses more on character and less on the villian of the week.   I'm sad SyFy cancelled this show after two seasons because it is my favorite of the STARGATE shows.
