Harry Rawlings (Liam Nesson) and his crew botch a job and die at the hands of the Chicago police. Harry's widow, Veronica (Viola Davis), is threatened by a local crime boss, Jamal, who wants Veronica to pay back the $2 million that Harry's crew stole. Veronica is desperate and comes across Harry's book of contacts and jobs (including the next job he was planning to do). She pulls together a couple of the other widows and one other as they attempt the heist so Veronica can pay off Jamal and each of them can settle for a new life. Meanwhile, Jamal is going against a local Chicago politician Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell) in a local election and Jamal needs the $2 million for his campaign.

WIDOWS is a film adaptation of a 1980s British TV series of the same name. It is a twisty crime drama that delivers thrills along with exploring the seedy side of Chicago and the crooked game of city politics. It is a well cast drama from director Steve McQueen who co-wrote the screenplay with Gillian Flynn. Chicago serves as another character in the story which is one of the better heist dramas of recent years since HEAT.

FINAL ANALYSIS: WIDOWS is a fantastic heist film that rings with truth about politics, how men treat women, and how nothing seems to change.
