A couple infiltrates a cult to make a documentary about a woman who claims to be from the future and she is going to keep the chosen safe when the civil war comes.  Maggie is a cult leader with a strong personality that can push you and tear you apart.   Is she from the future?  Is she a fraud?  Will the couple finish their documentary?

SOUND OF MY VOICE is a thriller that questions your belief in people.  It makes the characters question who they are.  Brit Marling is intense as the so-called prophet from the future named Maggie.  Her body is failing as she amasses followers for the civil war she says is coming.   Brit Marling and director Zal Batmanglij wrote this script together and this is one of these films where the role fits the actress where most of Hollywood probably wouldn’t consider her for this role if this wasn’t an independent production.   I hope her performance and her writing abilities opens up more doors for projects like SOUND OF MY VOICE.  It is a better film than the previous film that Brit co-wrote and starred in (ANOTHER EARTH).  One of the main weaknesses is I wish they weaved the documentary footage into the movie instead of just dropping it quickly to focus on Maggie, the couple, and a curious little girl who goes to the same school where the guy teaches.   It makes for a good rental.

SPECIAL FETAURES:

THE MAKING OF SOUND OF MY VOICE is a five minutes of promo fluff to promote the movie- not much in the way of how the movie was made.

MAGGIE- Screenwriter/ director Zal Batmanglij and screenwriter/ actress Brit Marling talk about the character of Maggie and the story of the movie.

Rounding out the extras are the theatrical trailer for SOUND OF MY VOICE and trailers for other releases from 20th Century Fox.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  THE SOUND OF MY VOICE is a well written and directed thriller with Brit Marling stealing the show with her intense performance as Maggie.  I do wish it was a little longer to develop the characters more.
