Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andre Riseborough) are living a quiet life in the Northwest USA until a nightmarish
cult and a demented biker gang (Known as the Black Skulls) makes them targets at the will of a crazy cult leader (Linus Roache).
The cult leader wants to make Mandy his, but soon Red's life becomes a nightmare as he seeks revenge against the cult.
If you have seen BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, you know what to expect of writer/ director Panos Cosmatos as he delivers another
video and audio experience that is somewhere between a dream and a nightmare. MANDY is an insanely beautiful and violent
revenge flick that pays homage to the craziest 1980s movies while delivering a movie that is like a psychedelic experience
that is full of beauty and sometimes rage. On a sad note, MANDY also marks the last score from late composer Johann Johannsson
and it is a beautiful score that fits the movie. The sometimes gonzo acting style of Nicolas Cage fits this movie and its
punk rock colors in the nighttime scenes.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Three deleted scenes and two extended scenes are included on the disc. I wish the first deleted scene had remained in
the movie while the uncut Cheddar Goblin commercial is both funny and gross (who doesn't want their kids to eat mac and cheese
regurgitated by a goblin)
BEHIND THE SCENES OF MANDY is a 22 minute making-of featurette that features interviews with Panos Cosmatos, the producers,
other crew members, and actor Linus Roache with a mix of production stills, pre-production art, behind-the-scenes footage
from the production and rehearsal footage, and scenes from the movie. Learn that they originally wanted Nicolas Cage as the
cult leader, but he was more interested in playing Red Miller and how Elijah Wood and other producers were interested in producing
this movie since they saw BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW.
FINAL ANALYSIS: MANDY is a beautiful force of cinema. Watch this one and BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (if you haven't already
seen it). I can't wait to see what Panos Cosmatos does next and I hope it doesn't take another five years for his next movie.
