Director Shane Abbess’ latest movie, INFINI, takes place in the 23rd century where people are able to go to other solar systems by the way of people doing Slipstreaming which transmits their bodies and reassemblies the data.   An East Coast Slipstream team on Earth is sent to stop a dangerous mining shipment from reaching Earth (and destroying it) on a mining colony off the known routes and rescue Whit, the only survivor of a West Coast Slipstream team.   What they find on this mining colony is an alien contagion that can spread by contact and they have to worry about their anger tearing each other apart.

INFINI starts with a great premise with excellent suspense and production design before becoming your standard “we’re infected and beat each other up” type of movie for the second half of the movie.  This is Shane’s first movie since GABRIEL which I recommend that you check out.   He has been stuck in development hell in Hollywood trying to get a movie off the ground between GABRIEL and INFINI.  I was glad that he was convinced by a friend to come back to Australia to get a movie made and that risk to move back has paid off with INFINI.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The only extra is the theatrical trailer and no other extras like a featurette or an audio commentary that could at least focus on how the movie was made (and came about).

FINAL ANALYSIS:   Shane Abbess has plenty of talent, but INFINI is a mixed bag that is entertaining for a rental and he is one to watch to see what he does with his other movies due to his ability to direct a suspenseful sci-fi movie.  I hope it doesn’t take several years for him to get another movie made.
