Orin Jericho is,  an escaped prisoner, fleeing from a soldier named Lt. Centauri 7 after the Prometheus crashes on a desolate desert world.   Centauri 7 wants to Kill Jericho even though Centauri's race believes Jericho is the key to save people from genocide (even though Centauri's people committed genocide against Jericho's race).    It is a battle for survival as Centauri waits for rescue and Jericho not wanting to get caught.    Who is the hunter and who is the prey?   It shifts several times.

Director Sandy Collora created a low budget 70s style sci-fi film on a Red One camera in Mexico.  Filmed on $400,000 budget, it is the feature debut from a director many know best for his short film, BATMAN: DEAD END.   HUNTER PREY is an intense tale of survival and a film that shows you can create a film on nothing (and make it look like a film on a bigger scale).   It has few special effects and uses the landscape of  a Mexican desert for the alien world.   For 85 minutes, you follow two people at odds with each other as they try to survive.   They are aliens on an isolated world and you don't expect them to bond.   Each one believe they are right in what they are doing.   Jericho just wants to survive and get revenge while Centauri 7 wants revenge for his fellow soldiers who are killed off.

I want more low budget sci-fi films like HUNTER PREY, GABRIEL, and DARK METROPOLIS.   I like the type of films that struggle and get inventive to tell an effective story or at least present something more filmmakers should be trying since the big blockbusters keep getting bigger budgets.   HUNTER PREY is like a movie you could mount as a play.   It is an in intimate story about two characters in a hostile landscape.  Jericho presnts a view about his race while Centauri 7 believes the strong survive.  The movie opens with something about those who adapt will survive and not those who are the strongest.   Jericho adn Centauri adapt to their landscape during the course of the film.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Audio commentary with director/ co-writer Sandy Collora which ahs plenty of production info and it comes off as a little dry.  THE MAKING OF featurette is more interesting to watch as it follows the film from creation to post-production.  It has interviews with cast and crew with some behind-the-scenes material.   So watch the featurette and skip the commentary.

FINAL ANALYSIS:   HUNTER PREY is another low budget sci-fi film made to look like it was made on a bigger budget.   With the right people and approach, sci-fi films don't all need to be big budget action films.   I wish there were more low budget marvels like this film.
