THE LAST WITCH HUNTER

Movie review by David Blackwell

105 minutes, Rated PG-13

STARRING Vin Diesel, Michael Caine, Elijah Wood

DIRECTED by Breck Eisner

STUDIO: Summit Entertainment/ One Race Films/ Atmosphere Productions/ Goldman Pictures

Theatrical RELEASE DATE: 10-23-2015

Kaulder (Vin Diesel) is a witch hunter cursed with immortality about almost 800 years ago by the Witch Queen (who was planning to release a plague to destroy humanity) before he seemingly kills her. During the centuries, Kaulder works for a religious organization called the Axe and Cross to enforce and maintain the fragile truce between humanity and the witches.  His exploits are chronicled by a priest known as a Dolan.  The 36th Dolan (Michael Caine) is about to retire and the 37th Dolan (Elijah Wood) will take his place.  When the 36th Dolan is discovered to be murdered by witchcraft, Kaulder must remember his death and stop a new plague from destroying humanity with the help of a witch named Chloe (Rose Leslie).

THE LAST WITCH HUNTER has franchise written all over it as they are already developing a script for a sequel.  It has great action and visuals.  It will entertain Vin Diesel fans as they wait for another Riddick or Fast and the Furious sequel.  Some of the characters serve as a means for Vin to play off of or to further the plot with Elijah Wood’s character being underdeveloped.   I was entertained enough by it as I would watch a sequel to this movie as the concept and characters show promise.
