WOLFCOP is the best 19802 horror comedy made for 2014.  It is very in on the joke and I wonder why no one has made a movie about werewolf comedy before now.  I think fans of such comedy cult classics like IRON SKY would dig this movie.  The vampire cop genre started back in the 1980s and I wonder if WOLFCOP will see some imitations following, but I am glad a sequel is coming as soon as they figure out the financing for it (they’re looking for a budget twice the size of the $1 million of the first movie).  It was filmed in the Canadian towns of Moose Jaw and Regina (in Saskatchewan) which stand in for the fictional town of Woodhaven on a 17 day schedule with five days of pick-up shooting.

 

Sheriff Deputy Lou Garou (Leo Fafard) is an incompetent alcoholic cop in a small town where the big yearly event is the Drink and Shoot.  This year’s event is cancelled when someone is murdered and Lou wakes up with a pentagram carved into his chest.  He soon finds he is turning into a werewolf at night and he starts going after crime in very bloody ways.   He also has to solve the mystery of why he was turned into a werewolf which is something that happens to someone every 32 years.   WOLFCOP is a great blend of action, horror, humor, femme fatale bartender (Sarah Lind), a fellow female cop named Tina (Amy Matysio) who solves crimes better than Lou, and wolf puns (Piggies, Red Riding Hood).   Lou Garou is the type of character you will root for like you rooted for Ash of the Evil Dead movies (maybe they need to get Bruce Campbell for a future WOLF COP sequel). You should watch this movie because you might be kicking yourself and howling why you didn’t.

WOLFCOP UNLEASHED (45:51)- more of a making-f documentary instead of featurette and it is very detailed from the origins or the projects, getting it funded by winning the Cinecoup contest, the making of the movie, the practical effects, post-production, and having it released.

FINAL ANALYSIS: If you love low budget horror like the EVIL DEAD and crave another 1980s horror romp, WOLF COP is the right movie for you.  Writer/ Director Lowell Dean has created the best horror comedy on this side of the 1980s in quite a while.  Lots of great extras give fantastic insight into the journey and making of this little cult movie.  The only bad news for people wanting to buy the blu-ray in the USA is that they have to wait two months to buy it or go to Best Buy (or order from BestBuy.com) since they have the exclusive window on the blu-ray for a two month period.
