PREMISE: Stargate Command send a team to another galaxy to take control of Atlantis as an outpost for Earth. The team lead
by Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Lt. Colonel Sheppard face an ancient threat that has been awaken- The Wraith (an old enemy of the
Ancients). The end of season one brought assistance from Earth in the form of the starship Daedalus. Season 2 leaves off
where Atlantis being betrayed by an alliance they set up with some of the Wraith.
ANALYSIS: STARGATE ATLANTIS exploded with season 3. After the uneven writing of season 2, season 3 features an old foe stepping
into the world of STARGATE ATLANTIS for the first time- the Replicators (who feature in four episodes during the season).
Also the season finale, FIRST STRIKE, sets up the fourth season with one hell of a cliffhanger. By the casting news for
season 4 and a character death in season 3 (do main characters ever stay dead in sci-fi shows?), season 4 gears up to be as
interesting and great as season 3. The third season develops the characters even more and features a few characters from
STARGATE SG-1 (General O'Neill, Colonel Carter).
The STARGATE ATLANTIS DVD set doesn't disppoint again with another wealth of extras. Too bad they don't have any deleted
scenes or a gag reel. Audio commentaries were recorded for every episode except for THE REAL WORLD. Members of the crew
contribute to the commentaries (directors, producers, VFX supervisors), but the cast are absent from the tracks this time.
INSIDE STARGATE ATLANTIS VISUAL FX DEPARTMENT (DISC 1)- an inside look at the work that the in-house VFX team does for the
third season with pre-viz and clean plate footage compared to the final shots.
PROFILE ON RACHELL LUTTREL (DISC 2)- all about the actor who plays Teyla.
GENERAL O'NEILL GOES TO ATLANTIS (DISC 3)- the writers and Richard Dean Anderson chat about General O'Neill's appearances
in three episodes (THE REAL WORLD and THE RETURN Part 1 & 2) with behind-the-scenes footage from THE RETURN.
MASTERS OF THE ALIEN (DISC 4)- a look at the work that the vIsual FX Makeup team working on the show. It mostly focus on
makeup effects from Wraith episodes in season 3 (SATEDA, COMMON GROUND).
STARGATE ATLANTIS: A LOOK BACK AT SEASON 3 WITH MARTIN GERO (DISC 5)- Martin Gero reflects on the various episodes and changes
for season 3 in addition to one character detah and setting things up fro season 4.
MISSION DIRECTIVE featurettes for SATEDA, PROGENY, PHANTOMS, THE GAME, and FIRST STRIKE have the director from each episode
take the fans into the making of each episode.
Photo and production design galleries are on each disc.
FINAL ANALYSIS: STARGATE ATLANTIS Season 3 has load of extras for fans on DVD in a season that is an improvement over season
