16 year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) journeys across the 19th century American West frontier from Scotland in search of Rose (Caren Pistorius), the woman he loves.   Rose and her father are on the run with a $2000 bounty on their head (wanted dead or alive).  He meets bounty hunter Silas (Michael Fassbender) who wants to use Jay to lead him straight to Rose and her father.   Jay and Silas are perfect contrasts of each other.  Jay has a naïve view of the West while Silas has a more cynical take on it where people are willing to kill others for what they want.   New Zealand perfectly stands in for the American West while SLOW WEST is a mix of quick bloodshed and lyrical storytelling.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

ON STRANGE LAND: MAKING SLOW WEST is a seven minute promotional featurette on the film that has interviews with cast and crew mixed in with bts footage and clips from SLOW WEST

Two deleted scenes (Hunters Cabin and Am Bata Uaine (performed by Ali ‘Beag’ Macleod)) which are under ten minutes total add nothing to the overall narrative and would have stopped the movie in its tracks.

Trailers for EX MACHINA, CUT BANK, BEYOND THE REACH, and THE HOMESMAN, but the theatrical trailer for SLOW WEST is unfortunately not on the disc

Also included with the DVD is a code to download and stream a digital ultraviolet copy of the film.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  SLOW WEST is a lyrical tale of the American West where naïve ideas may get you killed and you have to fight to survive.
