ROBIN HOOD is the latest revisionist take on the Robin Hood legend which ties into modern times. It is a better movie than many critics give it credit. This is the origin story of how Lord Robin of Loxley became Robin Hood. It starts with Robin (Taron Egerton) meeting and falling for Marion (Eve Hewson). Their happiness is interrupted when Robin is drafted to go fight the Crusades in the Middles East. He comes back three years to discover everyone thinks he was killed and his lands seized by the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn). He also sees Marion has moved on and has another man. A Muslim soldier named John (Jamie Foxx) has followed Robin back to England after robin tries to prevent the execution of John's son. He starts to teach Robin how to hurt the Sheriff and the Church of Rome by hitting the money they collect through overtaxing to fund the Crusades.

This version of the Robin Hood tale is very timely as it focuses on the rhetoric the powerful use to breed fear and justify wars. You could compare this to how various leaders like Hitler, Stalin, and Trump use language and catch phrases to keep in power. The Sheriff of Nottingham uses words as propaganda to justify the Crusades and high taxes in the name of supporting said war in the Middle East. Whether you agree or disagree, US President Donald Trump uses catchy phrases and even fear to push for a border wall and make some of the worst bed buddies with other countries we shouldn't be allied with at all. The costume design is sometime good and sometimes it is a little too modern by not sticking close enough (or be a creative variation of) to the fashion of the times when the Robin Hood tale is set. Due to bad word of mouth and poor box office, sadly we won't see future tales set in this Robin Hood universe as the ending sets up the Merry Men in Sherwood Forest.
