Young Pietari lives with his stern reindeer herding father Rauno in artic Finland.   On the eve of Christmas, a team of foreigners excavates something terrible from a nearby mountain.  Pietari believes the evil Santa of ancient local folklore is out to punish the children who have been bad.    RARE EXPORTS is a darkly comedic retelling of the Santa Claus myth is a holiday cult classic for those who want the traditional Christmas movie fare.   This film is the solution for those who want a different type of Christmas film and can stand a Grimm's Fairy Tale version of Santa Claus.   It does play out like an Xmas film, just in a darker way.    The young boy wants to believe in Christmas while his father is making ends meet (Rauno look like a Finnish version of Viggo Mortenson).    RARE EXPORTS is a fun and dark take on Christmas that doesn't outstay its welcome with the short running time.

The two original very comedic RARE EXPORTS films which lead to the feature film are included on this disc: RARE EXPORTS INC (2003) and RARE EXPORTS INC- THE OFFICIAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS (2005).

THE MAKING OF RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE is overlong as it takes you behind-the-scenes from rehearsals to the actual production to post-production to the film's world premiere at a film festival.

Also on the disc are trailers of other Oscilloscope Laboratories releases, the original Finnish theatrical trailer, a photo gallery, BLOOD IN THE SNOW- a look at the film's concept art, and a couple of different comparisons of the film's animatics and computer effects to the finished scenes during the film's climax.

FINAL ANALYSIS:   RARE EXPORTS is the anti-Christmas film for those who don't want the same type of Christmas film every year.
