OUTLANDER has finally come back to blu-ray with another addictive binge-worthy experience.  The season is basically told in flashback as Claire finds herself back in the present and season 2 tells the story of how she got back and what went wrong back in 1745 Paris and Scotland.  Claire and Jamie are trying to stop Prince Charles Stuart from starting the Jacobite Rebellion which will result in the Highland uprising failing with the Battle of Culloden and cause the highland way of life ending as they know it.   You can say that Jamie and Claire could be playing a part in making history happen by being involved in it or that history is doomed to happen like it always had.

OUTLANDER season 2 is also a good history lesson in the events of the time and the major real-life characters who Jamie and Claire interact with.  Jamie and Claire face off against the evil Count St. Germain who blames them for having one of his plague ridden ships being burned.   Also another enemy from season one returns like he is a cat with nine lives (as Jamie tries to kill the enemy again).   I do find Claire’s time in the 18th century to be more exciting than her adventures in the 20th century, but flashbacks to her time in the 20th century do get a little more interesting in the second half of the season.   Jamie is more exciting and passionate while Frank is boring and safe.  I can’t wait to watch season 3 since the first episode will show Jamie fighting in the Battle of Culloden (which wasn’t shown in the books).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Podcast commentaries for every episode.  Best podcast to listen to are the ones for episode 11 where Ronald D. Moore is joined by author Diana Gabaldon and episode 13 where Moore and others joke about a Claire Fraser P.I. show.  The podcasts offer a good behind-the-scenes insight on the making of each episode.

Over 100 minutes of deleted and extended scenes (with introductions by Ronald D. Moore) that amount to almost about 10 or so minutes of scenes cut from almost every episode and the scenes were largely cut for timing and pacing, but FAITH is presented on DISC 3 as a 90 minute extended episode

Gag reel of line flubs and swearing and other hilarity on DISC 4

Featurettes:

DISC 4-

CHARACTERS OF SEASON 2- a featurette focusing on the new characters introduced in the Paris part of the season

DESIGNING HISTORY: THE COSTUMES OF OUTLANDER- the costume designer, Ronald D. Moore, and the actors talk about the costumes designed for the 18th century Paris episodes

RECREATING 18TH CENTURY PARIS- a look at how they recreated 18th Century Paris with a combo of real locations and sets

DISC 5-

JAMIE & CLAIRE: TO HELL AND BACK- The two lead talk about the arc of their characters during season 2

FROM BOOK TO SCREEN; DISCOVERING THE DIFFERENCES- writers and author Diana Gabaldon talk about things that were changed for season 2 when adapting DRAGONFLY IN AMBER (book 2 of the OUTLANDER series) like having some scenes from Jamie’s POV (where the book is all from Claire’s POV) and how a pivotal scene was changed from the book for drama purposes in the season finale

FINAL ANALYSIS:   If you are a fan of the books and TV show, you will definitely want to own OUTLANDER Season 2 on blu-ray.  The extras are worth it in addition to the extended episode of FAITH.  It is a perfect way to wait out Draughtlander (the months between seasons of OUTLANDER when there are no new episodes).
