CUT BANK takes place in the small town of Cut Bank, Montana, but the movie is actually filmed in Canada.   It revolves around Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth) who hatches a scheme to get himself and his girlfriend (who is up for the Miss Cut Bank pageant) out of town to move to Los Angeles.  It starts with videotaping the murder of the local postal carrier (Bruce Dern), but he isn’t really dead.    His scheme starts to unravel as Derby Milton is on a single minded quest to get the vintage lunchbox he is waiting for in the mail (but surely the item would be shipped in a box and not have a postal label attached to the item itself).  Dwayne and Derby will eventually collide as a local sheriff (John Malkovich) investigates the murder missing a body.   CUT BANK is a thriller with some humor and it takes place in a mythic version of small town Montana (I have lived near small towns in Montana and they aren’t this idyllic like a Norman Rockwell picture mixed with a Cohen Brothers type movie).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Audio commentary with Director Matt Shakman and writer Roberto Patino

Three deleted scenes show characters like sneak out through the bedroom window and the two extended scenes include an extended scene with Derby Milton and a whiskey bottle I think should have been left in the movie.

BAD KARMA: LIFE IN CUT BANK is behind-the-scenes featurette that has interviews with Director Matt Shakman and writer Roberto Patino and it includes plenty bts footage and photos as they talk about the making of the movie, the story, the characters, and the casting

Previews for A MOST VIOLENT YEAR. EX MACHINA, and SON OF A GUN

FINAL ANALYSIS: CUT BANK is only really good when it focuses on Derby Milton (who seems to be the most fleshed out character of the whole movie) and the mystery to unravel what happened to the mailman.   Rent it.
