BIG BAD WOLVES is a Grimm’s Fairy Tale as if it was told by Alfred Hitchcock.   It has plenty of twists and surprises with a music score that reminds you of Bernard Herrmann.  It sucks you in until the shocking ending.   Writer/ Directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado have crafted a very Grimm Brothers tale that even refers to big bad wolves and even one of the characters refer to pedophiles as big bad wolves.  In BIG BAD WOLVES, a vigilante police detective is out to prove a bible studies teacher murdered and beheaded a little girl.  Soon the police detective’s path collides with the father of the little girl who is out for revenge and he wants to know where his girl’s head is buried.  I don’t see the humor in the movie, but it does work on a thriller level for me.  The production values are very high with an effective combo of editing and music to elevate the suspense.   The movie shows parts of Israel you don’t think exist since many Israel movies show off the desert more.  I say BIG BAD WOLVES is like one of the best Hitchcock-type movies that Alfred Hitchcock never made.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

MAKING OF BIG BAD WOLVES is a 16 minute promotional making-of featurette that has interviews with the cast and directors as they praise each other and mention that they did many of the effects as practical effects

AXS TV: A LOOK AT BIG BAD WOLVES- quick three minutes of promo fluff that is a very shortened version of the longer making-of featurette

Also on the disc is the theatrical trailer and previews for THE LAST DAYS ON MARS, BEYOND OUTRAGE, HERE COMES THE DEVIL, JOURNEY TO THE WEST, and AXS TV.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  BIG BAD WOLVES is a treat- like you mixed in Hitchcock and the Brothers Grimm into one movie.
