Michael Kohlhaas (Mads Mikkelsen) is a humble horse merchant (with a loving family) in 16th century feudal France  When Kohlhaas tries to seek legal action against a local Baron who wronged him, the court turns a blind eye on him and tell him to let it go, but he can’t let go and his wife is murdered.  He seeks revenge and a a little uprising starts behind his cause so he can right the wrongs done upon him.

AGE OF UPRISING is a well put together revenge drama which combines Westerns and Robin Hood in this tale of one man’s quest for justice in a tale adapted from a novella.   Mads Mikkelsen puts in another multi-layered performance as you can see a man who can be rigid and yet you can feel the emotion that Kohlhaas keeps at bay underneath.    The landscapes are used to great effect as the mountains and hills add to the landscape fo the story and movie. It is a timeless tale about injustice and how the powerful try to get away with anything like in today’s world.

INTERVIEW WITH MADS MIKKELSEN- in this interview (in English) recorded at Cannes Film Festival, he talks about how he became involved, how he prepared, the character, an dhow he likes to have a wide range of roles

INTERVIEW WITH ARNAUD DES PALLIERES- in this 20 minute interview at Cannes, he talks about the movie, comparing it to the movie to American Westerns, how he adapted it, and how he came to cast Mads Mikkelsen (in addition to general appreciation to the hard work the actor brought to the role)

16 minuets of deleted scenes which is a mix of extended scenes and material that adds more character development which I think were all cut for pacing

Rounding out the extras are the theatrical trailer and a few previews that play before the main menu (four World War 2 era dramas from Europe including GENERATION WAR and NORTH FACE)

FINAL ANALYSIS:   AGE OF UPRISING deals with timeless struggles of life and a man’s quest for revenge based on principle.  AGE OF UPRISING is an interesting movie with an understated performance from Mads Mikkelsen.
